Today I have to take a moment and tell you what a proud daddy I am. If you have been around our family for any length of time I am sure that you have met our sweet daughter, Gabriella. Gabi, is a creative, sweet, imaginative, caring, funny and talented eight year old. She has never met a stranger and goes out of her way to make everyone feel special and loved. She was born with music in her bones and can't help but move and dance anytime (and anywhere) she hears music! Gabi also love to sing. She is always making up songs and sings, hums or whistles all day long. She has been learning how to play piano for several years now and really enjoys it, and she is getting quite good!
The other day I was helping her learn a new song, and it started a bit rough. It was a harder song than she had played in the past because it had new and different rhythms and notes and she was getting a bit frustrated. And so was I. She started pushing back, shutting down and telling me, the teacher, how it should be done. You see, Gabi, like her father, doesn't do so well when she doesn't get things perfectly the first time, so I had to step back and think about how to approach this in a different way. The tune was a familiar one, and I realized (because it was written at the top of the page) that this was part of Tchaikovsky's “Sleeping Beauty Waltz”, the easy kid friendly version. One thing to note here is that Gabi is amazing at picking up the feel or tune of a song within seconds of hearing it. So I looked the song up on iTunes and played it for her. Of course, the minute she heard it she started dancing and imagining herself waltzing with her prince! Then she was able to sit down, with a better knowledge of what the song is supposed to sound and feel like, and play it with more understanding and confidence!
I was amazed at the transformation from frustration to freedom. This interaction with Gabi reminded me of my relationship with God. So many times I get frustrated and try force my way through things, think I know better, or just give up because I can't get it right the first time, but if I just relax and listen to the music, I find freedom. When I step back and realize it is better to let God guide and teach instead of trying to tell God how it should be or just making it up on my own, I find freedom. So, I want to encourage you today if you are frustrated and feel like giving up or just are just tired of feeling like you can't get it right, to take a step back, relax and listen to the music. Let God's song fill you with confidence and freedom. Even though it might not make sense right now, in God's timing you will hear His beautiful symphony and find freedom!
Here is a video of Gabi playing the "Sleeping Beauty Waltz." Enjoy!
I hope you are encouraged today! Let me know what you think by leaving a comment here. I would also appreciate it if you would share this with your friends! Thanks for hanging out with me today!
