Have you ever found yourself trying to be something that you're not? Have you ever tried to be like someone else so that you would fit in? Has there ever been a time when you have tried to be something you're not because you think that is what people expect you to be?

If you are ever around kids, you can see this take place right before your eyes. Everyone wants to fit in. Everyone wants to belong. No one wants to be "different." They all take on each others personalities  Sometimes that is great! Sometimes, not so great. Recently, Gabi and I have been having conversations on this very topic. It is easy to be like everyone else. It is hard to stand up and be yourself, be an individual. It goes against the norm. It is hard to be the only one that is "different" even if different is doing what is right.

I find myself doing this still today. Instead of being the best me I can be, I try to become what I think others want me to be. I worry more about who people think I should be instead of who God made me to be. I am not talking about being weird or crazy just for different's sake. I am just talking about being the best you, you can be. We can do this in so many easy ways that don't take a lot of effort, it just takes a little self awareness. For example, we can be respectful, polite, honest, joyful, self controlled, patient, and kind. Sounds a bit like the verse in Galatians 5:22-23. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

God gave each of us wonderful personalities. We are all individuals. We are unique. God has made each one of us special. He wants us to be the best we can be and not buy into the lie that we have to be someone or something else so that people will like us or so that we "fit in." When each of us brings our own unique gifts to the table, beautiful things can happen!

The legendary singer, Sammy Davis, Jr. has a song that talks about this very idea...

"Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am

I want to live, not merely survive
And I won't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am"

I love what he says about living and not just surviving.  I want to live out the dream that God has given me. I don't want to just roll through life and never really live! Remember, be the best you, you can be! Don't settle for any less! Be who God made you to be and be proud of that!
