I don't know when it happens. I'm not sure that it even a conscious decision, but somewhere along the way a shift occurs. We get comfortable with our lives, our friends, our world and stop reaching out. We become more guarded, closed off and kept to ourselves. We either just choose to not do it, or are just tired of working so hard at it.
What am I talking about you ask? Making new friends. Yeah, I see you nodding your heads. As we get older it becomes more difficult, right? Less of a priority? We have our group of friends and don't want to grow or expand our circle to let anyone else in. We don't want to take the time or make the investment into getting to know someone new. Yeah, I know...I hear ya. There are, however, some people who can make a new friend anywhere they go, it's just a natural instinct for them. One group of people who can make friends easier than anyone I know...you guessed it...kids! You have seen it happen a million times I'm sure. If you get two kids in a room together sooner or later they will be playing, laughing and call each other "Best Friends."
Michelle and I have one of the most incredible examples of the "Fast Friends'' phenomenon with us all the time...her name is Gabi! It doesn't matter what situation she is in, whether she is with older kids or younger kids or even adults, she can make friends faster than anyone I know. She has a way of finding out what a person is interested in and talking to them about it and making them feel like the most important person in the room. It is AMAZING! She can command an audience with such ease and kindness that everyone falls in love with her instantly! When she needs to be the 'big girl' she steps right up and can help take care of younger kids with such great care. Then, she can turn around and be a friend to older kids and follow directions and be a team player. It doesn't matter who you are, what you look like or what you do, Gabi will be your friend from the moment she meets you!
I know that I am being a proud Papa and bragging on my little girl, but she is such a clear example of what God's love should look like. I hope I can grow up to be like her someday!
This weekend I am going to give a chalenge to myself and anyone else who will take it with me...Find someone you don't know, meet them, find out something interesting about them and just be friendly. You don't have to become best friends or even take it any further than that. Just share the Love of Christ by being a friend!
I would love to hear how it goes! Tell me your story here in the comments or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/justingravesband. I will let you know how it goes for me too! Can't wait to hear about it!
